With a focus on providing long-term housing, care and intensive support to young people aged between 16 - 22 years who would otherwise be homeless, this program provides a model of care and support in a family environment.
Vision
That all young people have the opportunity to live in a caring family environment that fosters respect and responsibility and enables them to grow and develop trusting relationships so they become contributing members of the community.
The Program
The St John of God Foundation Horizon House project is aimed at meeting the long term needs of disadvantaged and homeless young people.
Horizon House provides life skills, education, counselling and socialisation in order for these young people to break the cycle of homelessness ultimately reducing dependence on the welfare system.
One of our Policies is that our young people must be engaged in activities during the day that are focused on either education, self development, training or voluntary work. Primary Carers live with the young people 24/7 with support from a secondary carer. There is no staff rotation, giving young people a sense of stability and security allowing the development of trust.
Why is this program so unique?
There are programs within the community that service many hundreds of homeless youth. Unfortunately due to the pressure of numbers and the lack of resources to deal with all of the issues that these young people face, they often return to the same service or are repeat offenders in an unbroken cycle of transience and crime.
Each St John of God Foundation Horizon House accommodates up to six young people at any one time, allowing the program we offer to address the issues which led to their state of homelessness ie: lack of education, low self esteem, history of abuse or neglect. Thus, the outcomes are long term and the young people who go through the programme are able to become meaningful members of the community and stand as role models for other youth in similar seemingly impossible circumstances.

Rational for St John of God Foundation Horizon House Logo
In creating this logo, the main theme centres around two concepts – the vibrancy of youth and the care of the organisation and the people who are associated with the project.
The image of the lighthouse has been sketched in a manner that conveys the human touch of the project and at the same time is a celebration of success. The peak of the image indicates growth and reaching out in achieving the goals and vision of the house, that is to change the lives of homeless young people in Western Australia.
The heart at the centre of the image symbolises the love and care of the group at the centre of the project and the caring environment of the house.
While expressing vibrance and enthusiasm, the colours used are also warm and friendly, again conveying the human element of care involved in the St John of God Foundation Horizon House.
