On Thursday, 4 December 2003, Perth’s second St John of God Foundation Horizon House in the northern suburb of Wanneroo was officially opened by patron His Excellency the Governor of Western Australia, Lieutenant General John Sanderson AC.
The Servite Community kindly donated their old priory to the St John of God Foundation for use. As the property had been vacant for over 3 years and had been badly vandalised, the Department of Housing and Works supplied the materials and labour to make the house habitable by replacing all windows and ensuring all power outlets and plumbing were in good working order. Once this had been completed, Erin Painting were bought in to paint the internals and externals of the house, with Mr Tony Fiorentino coming in to renovate the kitchen and gardens, and put the finishing touches to this amazing transformation.
The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay through the funds raised at the Subiaco Craft Fair contributed once again to the establishment of the study and library resources for the second Bendat House.
Once the house was complete, St John of God Foundation secured a grant from Lotterywest to furnish the house. So, with sturdy new brightly coloured furniture, the home was complete, warm and welcoming.
Horizon House project major benefactors, Mr and Mrs Jack and Eleanor Bendat were kind enough to donate $100,000 toward the operation of the house, this being part of the $2Million pledge made by this generous couple at the inception of this project.
Since its opening in 2003, Bendat House Wanneroo has seen some exciting developments with a ‘Work for the Dole’ Program being the catalyst for a massive horticultural upgrade to the front section of the immense property. Read more [Link to LATEST NEWS & Work for Dole Press Release]
